In front of you is a wooden and steel garden shed with an overhang situated on the edge of the Volunteer Garden. In front of you, under the overhang of the shed, is a picnic table, where you can sit to take a break if you would like. Woodland Garden: This woodland garden is composed of a plant community on the forest floor below the tree canopy. Openings between trees provide a mixture of dappled sunlight and shade. This creates an understory forest habitat made up of native shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, and ferns. The understory features several native plants, such as lady fern, dwarf fothergilla, columbine, and foam flowers. The dwarf fothergilla, located to the right of the sign, is a shrub with leaves that have a rounded base, scalloped edges, and a pointed tip. Their leaves turn red in the fall. In the spring the tips of the stems are covered in white, round-shaped flowers. Smell the flowers. Do they smell sweet like honey? What does this plant remind you of? If you would like, reach out and touch the image of the flowering shrub on the right half of the sign. Captured in the image are round, white flowers with skinny white petals. The flowers are surrounded by several green leaves. Continue along the paved trail, down the hill 230 feet to the next sign. The sign is across the path once you reach the bottom of this slope.
